What is Single Sign-On (SSO)?

Single sign-on or SSO allows users to access various websites and applications with a single authentication. With this technology users are able to log in once and they receive access to a variety of different online locations without needing to enter their user name or password in again. Having a single set of login credentials is incredibly convenient for users. SSO improves user experience, boosts productivity, and reduces password fatigue.

So how does SSO work? A user goes to a website and signs in using their login credentials. From the single login, the session information is shared through a central domain where an authentication is conducted. Once the authentication is completed the session is shared with other sites. When the user visits another website that requires login credentials the site references the authentication server from the original login site and verifies the user. After the verification the user is automatically logged in.
